Clare Corban - Banks

Born in New Zealand, Clare began learning viola as a young girl, receiving private tuition throughout her school years. She gained a Scholarship to study viola professionally for 3 years with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Schola Musica, an educational ensemble which prepared string players for orchestral life.  Clare was also leader of the viola section in the NZ Youth Orchestra for a number of years.

She received tuition from the renowned violist Vyvyan Yendoll throughout these years. She has also studied with Jan Tavrosovich, Dr John Thomson and Philip Clark.

On completion of her studies Clare worked as violist in the NZSO for 3 years. Becoming a full-time mother meant the next 20 years were filled with part-time positions in the Auckland Philharmonia, Balearic Symphony Orchestra (Spain), Viva Chamber Orchestra and various quartets and ensembles.

Private teaching was a constant love however. The challenge of designing a development programme for each individual’s unique requirements continues to make teaching a joy. Coming to Tasmania at the beginning of 2013, Clare is delighted to be a member of “Camerata Obscura”, “Bon Accorde Ensemble” and also teach violin and viola privately. Teaming up with Alexandra Harris, Kristyll Hansen and Alys Wade means a dream come true. The Northern Tasmania String Academy offers a “whole package” musical education with individual tuition and regular group work. Music is meant to be enjoyed and shared!
